Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) is an evidenced-based, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire maternity care team with skills to effectively manage obstetric emergencies. This comprehensive course encourages a standardized team-based approach amongst physicians, residents, nurse midwives, registered nurses and other members of the maternity care team to improve patient safety and positively impact maternal outcomes.
Any clinician providing obstetrical care who has already obtained their ALSO Provider status is eligible to become an approved ALSO Approved Instructor. This includes physicians as well as residents, registered nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, paramedics and physician assistants or any other healthcare worker who has obtained their ALSO Provider Status. The ALSO Instructor Course equips current ALSO Providers with the skills and knowledge they need to effectively teach ALSO courses. Any learner in the ALSO Instructor Course who has not completed the most current version of the ALSO online content must do so prior to the Instructor Course to familiarize themselves with the course’s new educational format.
Overall Course Objectives:
- Plan to utilize demonstrated educational tools that can be used when giving feedback to ALSO course participants.
- Identify strategies to assist participants with questions and conflicts that can occur during the workstations.
- Develop plans to demonstrate teaching competence in hands-on role-play utilizing maternal-fetal mannequins, including providing timely feedback, and adaptation of teaching methods to various situations.
- Facilitate group discussion and consider ways to implement faculty and learner feedback to enhance the educational experience.
- Facilitate a simulated group testing scenario from set up through team observation, debriefing and evaluation.
- Devise a plan to assist Instructor Candidates in achieving and maintaining full ALSO Instructor status.
CME and CNE Information:
the AAFP has reviewed ALSO Instructor Course and and deemed it acceptable for up to 3.25 live AAFP Prescribed credits. Term of Approval is from 4/16/2021 to 4/16/2021. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CME credit for the Instructor course can be obtained by physicians only at this time. This course does not qualify for CNE nursing contact hours to to state board regulations.
Learners will be provided an email that includes a URL/link to the Online ALSO Instructor Course. Content consists of recorded lectures and recorded workstation demonstrations. After completion of the evaluation the Learners must Attest and Claim Credit to show as ‘Complete’ in the Sponsor’s Course Dashboard and to qualify to attend the Live Course.
After the Course:
The ALSO Course Sponsor is responsible for submitting the post-course Dashboard within one week after the Live course. After this submission, the Learners will receive an e-mail with a link which will direct them to their AAFP Account where they will find their Letter of Participation. Only Learners who successfully complete both the on-line and the live portion of the course will receive ALSO Instructor Candidate Status.
Instructor Candidates have one year from the date of their Live Instructor Course to teach in an ALSO or BLSO course while being observed by an Advisory Faculty. After being recommended for Approved Instructor, they will receive an email stating this and will find their Approved Instructor wallet card, with the Letters of Particpation in their AAFP Transcript/Account.
