Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in pregnant and parenting individuals creates an additional risk for opioid-related death. Pregnant individuals diagnosed with OUD at the time of delivery were found to be 4.6 times more likely to die during hospitalization. Prevention and early intervention are crucial to ensuring comprehensive care that improves outcomes for pregnant individuals and their families.
As a provider offering either prenatal or postpartum care, you can increase your ability to recognize OUD and provide optimal treatment for pregnant and parenting individuals and their babies. By utilizing a family-centered, empowering, and culturally relevant approach, you can build a more trusting and empowering relationship with pregnant individuals facing OUD.

- Build collaborative relationships with community and medical professionals to implement Care Plans for all perinatal individuals seen in their practice annually and integrate Plans of Safe Care when developed by Department of Child Protection and Permanency.
- Discuss community services available and care coordination strategies for providers that care for pregnant people with substance use disorders and their newborns throughout the perinatal period.
- Acknowledge the impact of stigma on the care of individuals with mental health and substance use disorders and explore strategies to reduce stigma and bias.
- Describe how to incorporate an integrated healthcare approach throughout pregnancy to improve transitions of care and engage the continuum of care to best support birthing people with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
