Connecting NJ Education Series: Summer Safety: Protecting Your Family with the Brain Injury Alliance of NJ

As summer approaches, families eagerly look forward to sunny days, swimming, and outdoor fun. While enjoying these activities, it’s crucial to prioritize safety to ensure a fun and injury-free season. That’s why Central Jersey Family Health Consortium’s Connecting NJ is excited to announce a collaborative education session with the Brain Injury Alliance of NJ focused on “Summer & Water Safety.” Water safety is important for drowning prevention and staying safe outdoors can help prevent serious accidents!

What to Expect

This engaging and informative session is designed for families and will cover essential topics to help you keep your loved ones safe this summer. Here’s what you can look forward to:

1. Open Water Safety

Swimming in open waters, such as lakes, rivers, and the ocean, presents unique challenges and risks. Experts will share crucial tips on:

  • Recognizing and avoiding dangerous currents and tides
  • Understanding the importance of swimming in designated areas
  • Keeping a vigilant eye on children at all times
  • The buddy system: never swim alone

2. Safety in and Around Pools

Pools are a favorite summer destination, but they also come with risks. We’ll discuss:

  • The necessity of constant supervision, even if lifeguards are present
  • Installing and maintaining proper barriers and pool covers
  • The importance of swimming lessons for children
  • CPR and emergency preparedness for poolside incidents

3. Proper Fitting Life Jackets

Life jackets are essential for water safety, but they must fit properly to be effective. Learn about:

  • Choosing the right life jacket for different water activities
  • Ensuring a proper fit for both children and adults
  • The dangers of using inflatables as substitutes for life jackets
  • Regularly checking the condition of life jackets

4. Sun Safety Tips

Protecting your skin and health from the sun’s harmful rays is just as important as water safety. We’ll cover:

  • The importance of using broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30
  • Wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
  • Seeking shade during peak sun hours (10 AM - 4 PM)
  • Staying hydrated and recognizing signs of heat exhaustion
